Your Lifestyle Could Be the Cause of Your Heartburn

Suffering from frequent episodes of acid heartburn is not pleasant for anyone. Knowing the causes of these acid heartburn attacks and how to try to limit or control them is the key to prevention. If you have many attacks several times per day, no matter what you do, you may have a much more serious condition than heartburn.

One of the leading causes of acid heartburn is consuming alcohol. It is known that alcohol relaxes your lower esophageal sphincter, which has the result of allowing the reflux of your stomach contents into your esophagus. Alcohol increases the production of stomach acids. If you must have alcohol, try to dilute your drinks if possible and limit the amount that you consume to one or two drinks.

Many people are accustomed to eating very large meals. It is difficult to know what a reasonable portion is these days and it is difficult not to eat too much. What happens with over filling the stomach is that it can lead to severe episodes of acid heartburn.

Fast foods that contain a lot of grease are one of the main culprits, and we already know that most often these meals are “super sized”, so we are really taking in more than we can digest in one sitting. The grease in these types of foods can cause severe acid heartburn, so it is a good idea to stop eating fast food, if possible.

If you eat anything later on at night, especially before you go to bed, that food is just sitting in your stomach. Once you lay down, you can suffer from acid heartburn because the food can be refluxed into your esophagus. Try not to eat late at night, to help to reduce the occurrence of these heartburn episodes.

Wearing tightly fitting clothes can also contribute to acid heartburn. The clothing causes too much pressure on your stomach which can force the contents upwards. The reflux of acid into your esophagus can cause a lot of discomfort.

Are your clothes too tight? Tight clothes press on your stomach, compressing the space in your stomach area, and causing the contents of your stomach to reflux into the esophagus. Try to avoid tight fitting clothes when possible.

The best way to reduce the incidence of these types of uncomfortable acid attacks is to clean up your eating habits. Try to cut down on your drinking and get plenty of sleep and exercise. Be aware of what you are eating at all times, food is the major contributing cause to heartburn. It is important to try to control the occurrence of these episodes before they become chronic.
